GMKTec G5 BIOS Update 1200MHz GPU
GMKTec G5 BIOS Update Dated May 22, 2024
Increases GPU clocks from 1000MHz to 1200MHz
Since another user mentioned they had an issue with activation of Windows after the BIOS update, I thought I'd let you know that I had that issue too. Initially I went to activate Windows and it said incompatible key. But after a couple days I tried again by clicking the "I change hardware on my system recently" (or something like that), and it activated just fine.

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 2 дні тому

      Disks can and will die, so you need some form of redundancy, preferably in the form of a separate backup or two. The golden rule in data management is 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of your data, 2 local, one remote. I like to use something like SnapRAID with Drivepool. It will use fewer disks than having an exact duplicate. Plus it has the advantage to scrub your data for errors. But even then that is not considered a backup. A backup should be another copy of your data separate from your main data, incase of data corruption, loss from some form of physical disaster like electrical damage, fire, flood, theft, or even just user error. A separate local copy will let you recover that data, and the third remote will allow you to recover from a larger local disaster or if your local backup is also corrupted for some reason.

      @@htwingnut I just want it setup where if a drive dies i can just replace it and then the data is recovered via the other drives. is stablebit drivepool good enough for this on windows? it will only be used for media for a plex server.

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 2 дні тому

      @@psychomaniac189 The answer, unfortunately, is not that simple. In most cases disks give some warning before they start to die as long as you are monitoring them, particularly their SMART status. If you couple DrivePool with Stablebit Scanner, once it detects a failing drive, it will evacuate the data off the failing drive to the free space in your pool, as long as there's enough free space in your pool. If you want to increase your likelihood of not losing data in the event that a disk DOES die WITHOUT warning, then you have a few options: 1. Use DrivePool pool duplication, which will require you to have double the capacity. Or you can just choose to duplicate specific folders. 2. Use SnapRAID with DrivePool which can protect up to 8 data disks (or more) using only two additional disks for parity. 3. Have an external backup. This is the case whether you use Drivepool or any other RAID or pooled management solution. In your case I would strongly consider using SnapRAID. Using two disks for parity will give you the ability to recover loss of up to two disks simultaneously.

    The story so far: Purchased from Amazon, GMKtec Mini PC N97 Windows 11 Pro Micro Desktop Computer, 12th Gen Intel N97 12GB DDR5+256GB SSD, runs fine. Purchased from Amazon, Dogfish SSD M.2 2242 1TB NGFF Internal Solid State Drive High Performance Hard Drive for Desktop Laptop SATA III 6Gb/s (1TB, M.2 2242). Installed Macrium Reflect on a portable hard drive and made a bootable Macrium Reflect clone of original 256 Gb SSD system on 64Gb USB thumb drive. Made copies of Create Windows 11 Installation Media on two separate USB thumb drives, (just in case). Set BIOS to boot from USB. Installed new SSD, restart boots straight to BIOS, try F7 boot, Reflect clone drive gives blue screen Error code 0xc00000e. Try F7 reboot with Win 11 Create Windows 11 Installation thumb drive, changes screen resolution font size only, no further progress with either drive. Research shows GMKtec indicate “Secure Boot” should be enabled. Check BIOS (still with 1Tb SSD installed and see “Secure Boot” is disabled. Cannot get access to the “Secure Boot” screen in BIOS security settings again with 1Tb SSD. Reinstall original 256GB SSD, now have access to “Secure Boot” screen in BIOS security settings, follow GMKtec instructions to enable “Secure Boot”, Save and exit BIOS. Reinstall 1TB SSD, attempt to boot from all thumb drives, same result. Recheck BIOS and notice “Secure Boot” is disabled again, and I am locked out of making changes. Manage to turn on “Secure Boot” again by pressing F2? (reset to previous setting)., (still no proper access to “Secure Boot” in BIOS security settings). Reboot from any device still fails.

    I got mine a couple weeks ago, and it already came with BIOS 1.01 It's a nice little box but the temperatures seems a bit high to me. Do you think that repasting (using ptm7950) could improve things?

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 6 днів тому

      Try adjusting the fan profile. In the BIOS go to Advanced -> Hardware Monitor -> Set Smart Fan mode to "Software Mode" -> Set Manual PWM Setting to "255". This will set the fan to full speed. Check temps then. (4:07 in video). Check temps, and if it works OK, then you can set it back to Automatic Mode, and set Fan off to 30, Fan Start 50, Fan Full Speed 60 or 65. Or play with the settings to whatever works for you. I'd only repaste if the temps remain high with fan at high speed and at your own discretion and skill and comfort level with disassembling the unit.

    Thanks for the in-depth review. My usb3.0 WD mypassport 4tb HDD doesn't require external power when plugged to my Pi5. Will it work with the G5? Does the G5 supply the same level or more of power to USB ports? Maybe using a 65w usbc brick would supply enough to the usb ports? what do you think?

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 11 днів тому

      I believe I have a portable hard drive somewhere, and will try it out. But I don't think it's an issue with the power supply, it's how much power the USB port has been spec'd to provide. That's a GMKTec design consideration. Chances are they spec'd it to the minimum 5v x 0.9A for 4.5W. While technically OK, some HDD's and SSD's will draw up to 6 or 7 W at peak and most USB ports can easily support that. That being said, I did plug in a 12V 5A 60W power supply and it still didn't matter.

    In your description you said the motherboard has x4 pcie slot. The first video card (Nvidia 710) graphics card is a x1 pcie video card and only requires 1 pcie lane. The msi video card is a x16 video card which requires 16x pcie lanes to work. The NVME adapter also looks like a x16 device which would require 16 pciei lanes to work. The LSI is a x8 device and requires 8 pcie lanes to work.

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 13 днів тому

      Thanks for the feedback. However, all the power comes from the front 11 pins, up to 75W, and then the data lanes are everything behind it. A 16x card can run perfectly fine in a 1x slot, just with reduced performance. I think I have a video somewhere showing this.

    Been messing about with options for upgrading my plex &media server, currently use windows 10 and Microsoft storage spaces on a 12 year old machine, got a new build done and after messing about with everything from unRAID to TrueNas to Proxmox to TrueNAS within Proxmox and where thy all have their advantages, Unraid seemed to be the one IU got on with the best.... its just $249 for a full licence which made me pause tbh. So went back to windows (windows server 2022 this time instead of windows 10 or 11) and whilst looking how I can improve on efficiency of storage spaces using PowerShell I happened across this video and it convinced me to give snapraid and stablebit drivepool a go. Your review is amazing, I have never seen such a detailed SSD review. I have a question for you. I currently have a 1TB 870 Evo, but the space is not enough, so I wanted to buy a 2TB SSD. However, the 870 Evo is very expensive, and I saw the Acer SA100 for $82 in my country. The 2TB 870 Evo is $186, which is a significant price difference. I will only use this SSD for storing games. Will this cause me serious problems in the future? A slight performance drop is not an issue for me; I don't expect 870 Evo performance, but I saw on some forum sites that the controller is problematic.

      If you're more concerned about read performance than write, it should be perfectly fine. The Acer actually performed much better than I anticipated compared to other "low end" SSD's. Some would tank to sub 100MB/sec write performance level after some time.

    I don't know if this is only for my PC. But last week I updated the BIOS of the G5. And I just noticed that my Windows is not activated anymore, with error code 0xC004F211, hardware has changed. I already contacted GMKtec support and waiting for their reply, they're usually very helpfull. Did you notice this too?

    One follow-on note here - you can still do hardware transcoding on windows, but you won't get proper tone mapping. I don't think that would have stopped you from transcoding on windows, it would have probably just caused the image to look washed out. There is a slim chance that I'm wrong about this, and that attempting to hw transcode 4K HDR content on windows would fallback to the software transcoder, but I don't believe so.

    • @htwingnut

      I haven't been able to get it to work properly in Windows. Granted, I don't normally use Windows for Plex, but everything I've tried so far it wouldn't work.

  • @newstandardaccount
    @newstandardaccount 17 днів тому

    26:52 - I had to pause the video and look at the frames because you scrolled by the playback info pretty quickly, but I noted that in your 4k=>1080p transcode test you weren't using the iGPU in the N100 to handle the transcode. If you're using hardware transcoding, then Plex will show "(hw)" after the transcoding information. For sure this CPU isn't powerful enough to handle 4K software transcodes, but the iGPU should be powerful enough to handle a 4k transcode - probably a few of them.

    After the update my windows got deactivated and could not be reactivated with the included oem license, what's your experience ?

    • @htwingnut
      @htwingnut 17 днів тому

      I had a similar experience, as it gave me the "Actiavate Windows" watermark for the first day or two. I didn't mention it in the video because I figured it was a Windows server activation issue based on the error code. After a couple days I went to manually activate it by clicking on the "I updated hardware recently" option and it activated just fine. I just figured it was Microsoft being Microsoft as I've run into this in the past. If it doesn't activate, I would contact GMKtec and they should be able to provide you with an updated key.

      @adrianyorke 5 днів тому

      @@htwingnut I contacted GMKtec. They were not willing to provided an updated key so I bought a new licence at my own cost. I think you need to register the device with Microsoft BEFORE upgrading the bios by hooking up an MS account, then the machine is registered and recognised when you update the bios. I was using a local account only with the original bios which was my preference for this device. Thanks for the awesome content btw! Now I want to purchase a more powerful develoment machine but I'm put off GMKtec support after this incident.

    Nice update. I'm still testing but my focus is on Retro Gaming and this thing has exceeded my expectations. I'm running my fan @ 100% and maybe I have a good fan as, noise is not an issue here. (Or my tolerance is greater perhaps) I don't have a meter (other than using a phone app) to test however. Again, just want to mention how fast this thing cools when CPU load is stopped and the 105c MAX temp Intel state for the N97. When i'm all done, I will probably make a video..

    Perhaps the issue with that SSD USB adapter is that the USB port used wouldn't deliver enough power consistently to the SSD. I've had issues with NVME SSD USB adapters in this way in the past and usually using a powered hub would solve the issue.

    in the type C power adapter cable is there only 2 cables? positive and negative cable? I'm asking because let's say if the original Power Adapter became faulty, I can just buy a normal power adapter and join the original type c cable and normal power adapter together by cutting off half the original cable- as a replacement.

    • @htwingnut

      I would not recommend cutting and splicing. You can find alternate power adapters for relatively cheap. I also found this 100W brick PSU here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CHB1DF5Z
